Bruge Belgium, Watercolor
Brugge Trees
ink and watercolor
5" x 6 3/4"

These drawings from Belgium contain a great deal of texture and line across the entire image and are then worked over with watercolor. The line work in these images is dense and assertive with the main expressive qualities coming from the rhythm and direction of the pen. The city streets in the older Belgian cities are made up of narrow alleys that create tunnels of light and shadow. Like the bark pattern on an individual tree in a forest, each building has its own particular colors and textures that are unique and slightly different from the city that surrounds it. Each building interlocks with the next and pushes and pulls its neighbor, as if the buildings all grew together until there was no space left between. The density of the line work, color, and texture in the drawings work well to capture these qualities.
